Rocks Not Happy In Sacks by Gilbert Walking Bull and Sally Moore. Illustrations by tom novak.
In the mid 1970’s Gilbert Walking Bull decided to write down the stories that he grew up with, stories from the Lakota oral tradition. In order to do this he enrolled in a writing course to improve his English vocabulary and grammar. For one of the class assignments he wrote the poem, “Rocks Not Happy in Sacks”. The poem was included in the self-published anthology O-HU-KAH-KAN.
It wasn’t until 2005 that Gilbert decided to add sketches and put it in book form. He selected the artist, decided on the black and white format, and helped design the pages. It was important to him that the sketches include local vegetation and items from his native culture.
The resulting book is a beautiful expression of the belief that all things in creation are sacred.
The first edition, first printing is a hard cover book that was printed specifically for the memorial give-away held in honor of Gilbert one year after his death. The second edition is a soft cover book.
